Liberia: Former Nimba Senator Joins COVID-19 Fight; Donates Over US$25K Materials to Hospitals, Clinics in the County

Ganta, Nimba County – Former Nimba County Senator Adolphus Saye Taayor Dolo has joined the fight against the further transmission of the Covid-19 pandemic in Nimba County, yea Liberia.

By Franklin Doloquee, Nimba County

Nimba was among the first four counties to have reported confirmed cases of the virus, despite health authorities’ report being challenged by some locals, who have vehemently claimed that the county doesn’t have nor has it had any case of the Severe Acute Respiratory-CoV-2 cases. Notwithstanding, the locals have not provided any scientific proof that thwarts the health authorities reports.

However, experience from the 2014 Ebola outbreak and the fact that Covid-19 is killing across the world, cannot leave anyone in a state of denial that the virus does not exist and not present in the county.

Making his donation of medical materials recently, Mr. Dolo said the materials, which he claimed were worth over US$25,000, were donated to enable Nimbaians to fight against the virus.

He mainly focused his donation toward health facilities, including the ArcelorMittal operating hospital and the 45 government-run medical centers in the county.

He hoped that his donated items will bring relief to clinics and hospitals that are facing serious shortage of medical equipment and drugs.

Senator Dolo told this newspaper that since 2018 he has been donating to various hospitals and clinics in-order to address the health need of people in the county.

In addition to the medical equipment, Mr. Dolo has of late being giving out assorted food and non-food items to hospitals, clinics and to communities hit by storms.
According to him, all the government-run 45 health facilities and the ArcelorMittal hospital have benefited from his donations.

Materials donated included 400 PPE suits, two sterilization machines, 1000 pieces of facemask and 15,000 pieces of latex free syringes and needles. Others include 20,000 pieces of latex emanation gloves, 61 liters of chloral and 2,250 bags of powered detergent, 150 pieces of buckets, 200 bags of 25-kg rice, 200 bags of cement, and 100 bundles of zincs, among others.

He expressed thanks and appreciation to health workers for their sacrifices and also extended his deepest sorrow to the storm victims.

Two representatives of hospitals that benefited, Dr. Saye Pawon of Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center and Allen Zomonway of the Ganta United Methodist Hospital, said it was the first personal donation they have received since the COVID-19 outbreak.

Former Senator Dolo became senator back in 2005. He was defeated in the 2011 Senatorial election.

Mr. Dolo is among others including two former Nimba Superintendents — Dorr Cooper and Madam Edith Gongloe-Wehyee — who are aspiring for the upcoming senatorial election in October 2020.

Like Senator Prince Y. Johnson, former Senator Dolo has always boasted of being the one who led former President Charles Taylor’s militia fighters, mainly those from Nimba, to liberate Ganta from the hands of LURD rebels in 2003.
