Monrovia– Liberia starlet, Chauncey Freeman, has joined Israeli second tier club Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim from Watanga FC on a season long deal.
Freeman, who is one of Liberia’s brightest prospects, arrived in Israel Monday, August 12, for the 3-week trial at the Ramat Gan Stadium.
But the 18-year-old signed a one-year-old loan contract following an impressive four-day training session with an option of a permanent deal at the end of the season which will be based on performance.
Speaking to FrontPageAfrica from his base in Israel, the teenage forward said, the move means a lot and is excited to develop his game at the club.
“I feel very glad to join this great club; as the matter of fact, there are lots of great players in the club and I’m very pleased to play alongside them.”
“God first but the deal means a lot for me and I want to thank my families and fans for their massive support that they have shown me to reach this far,” Freeman said.
“Now, I have the opportunity to play at this level, and continue to progress through this is pathway at the Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim.”
The forward added. “My expectations going into the new season is to be much focused because there are lot of competitions in the squad with so many great players, and I have to train harder to be part of the team.”
The forward who made 35 appearances for Watanga FC scoring 19 and providing 16 assists, was an integral member of the Liberia U-20 team that finished runner-up to Gambia in the West Africa Football Union tournament that was held in Monrovia, making five appearances and scoring two goals.
The forward who made his debut for Liberia senior national team against Sierra Leone in a goalless draw and is hoping to be part of the new Lone Star coach Peter Butler’s squad against the same opponent in the World Cup preliminary round qualifiers on September 4, 2019 in Monrovia.
“I watched the new coach unveiling ceremony. I think he will make a fantastic coach for Liberia.”
“I like the part what he said that he wants to develop the game in the country and setup a youthful squad from the U-20 level to enhance the senior national team but if I am invited to be in the WAFU or the World Cup qualifiers squad, I would do it with open hands because every footballer dream is to represent his country,” Freeman.
Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister, Andy Quamie, who is the player’s manager, urged him to be focused and hopes he remains level headed, avoiding ego to creep into his spirit.
“I am happy for him, I just hope he stays focused and humble because most young players can grow wings with little opportunities come.”
“The club loaned him for one year, if he plays well, Watanga FC and Liberia will benefit,” Min. Quamie said.
